It is very easy to create a watermark and place it on your picture to safeguard them from getting copy-paste. So, let’s see how you can make sure no one sneaks away with your picture and claims it’s theirs.
Take any picture from your picture gallery or collection which you would like to publish on your website hosted on the internet which will be seen by thousands. Before you could go ahead and place it on the website, please do take a moment and put your copyright watermark either horizontally or vertically or even diagonally across the image. It’s all up to your choice so let’s begin our work right away.
Click on the File Menu from the Menu-bar which is located at the top of the Photoshop window and select the option ‘New’ from the drop down list. This is going to open a ‘New Document’ dialog box. You can now enter the ‘Width, length and resolution’ of your choice. Take for example, we will enter 6 inches width, 4 inches height and keep the resolution at 300 pixels/inch. This way we have defined the layout size. Now, it’s also very important to define the initial color of your canvas or ‘New Document’. For the time being let’s not pick any color and leave the background content as ‘Transparent’ which is an option available in the drop down box. Its time to click OK to see your new document as it appears in the size you specified i.e., 6 x 4.
Moving on with our objective, we shall now use the ‘Type Tool’ from the Tools palette. You can also use the Shortcut by pressing ‘T’ on your keyboard to pick this option. Pressing ‘D’ on the keyboard will automatically set the foreground color as Black if it’s not set by default. This way you can now type out your copyright information in Black Color.
Most important, in order to get ‘©’ which is regarded as a special character, you will need to Hold down Alt key and enter the number 0169 on your keyboards numeric keypad.  If you are using Mac then press Option-G. Now you are ready and can continue to type “© 2007 My Picture gallery” in the open text box.
Once you see the content on the screen in black color you can do some alteration for your watermark text to look much better. Select the text and press Ctrl + T in Windows and Command + T in Mac. This will bring the ‘Free Transforms’ handles around the watermark text. Move your pointer/cursor to the location just outside one corner handles where the cursor will change from an arrow to curved double sided arrow. Drag the image and move in any direction you want, either diagonally or vertically etc. this is an easy way to rotate your watermark text. Pressing Shift key will allow you to drag and rotate in even increments thereby increasing/decreasing the size as well. To apply the changes, press Enter if you are in windows or press Return if in Mac and that’s it. You are done.
Its time now to trim your new document around the Text and to do this you can once again go to Image Menu and select the option ‘Trim’. The Trim dialog box will now open where you can choose to get rid of all un-necessary space around your text. Since we choose ‘Transparent’ background content, we will select the option ‘Transparent Pixels’ from the Trim dialog box and press OK to apply the changes. Photoshop will now trim every pixel space around the text.
Next, wee will define the Text as a pattern. For this, let’s open the Edit Menu from the menu bar and select the ‘Define Pattern’ option from the drop down list. In the Pattern Name dialog box we will define a name for our watermark text for its identification, for example, you can type Copyright to easily identify your watermark text. Click OK to apply the changes.
You have worked everything that is required to get the watermark on your picture so right now we shall close the Copyright Document and let’s concentrate on our original picture which we will now open on the screen in Photoshop.
We will be required to add a new layer to our original picture document. This document only has one layer right now which is the background layer holding the picture. Remember, we would not like to add the copyright watermark picture directly to our background layer. Therefore, we will create a ‘New Layer’ by clicking on the icon which you can find at the bottom of the layers palette. You can also use the shortcut by pressing shift + Ctrl + Alt + N on your windows keyboard or Shift + Command + Option + N on a Mac keyboard. The new layer will always appear above the Background Layer with a default name of ‘Layer 1’ given by Photoshop.
Its time to fill the new layer created by Photoshop with the copyright pattern we created earlier.
Select the new layer from the layers palette and open the Edit Menu at the top of the screen. Now, select the ‘Fill’ option from the list. You will now see a Fill dialog box. Click on the use dropdown menu and select the ‘Patterns’ from the list. Click on the thumbnail image in the dropdown menu beside the ‘Custom Pattern’. You now have the choice to pick any one of the pattern from listed options.  Once you click OK, you will see the watermark text being filled on your image. Since our copyright is in black color you might not find your picture entertaining.
Lets change the Blend more to overlay and reduce the opacity to make sure our watermarks really looks like watermark. Since the black color is too prominent blocking much of image view, we shall select our new layer and select the ‘layer blend mode’ options from the top left layers palette window. Click on the down-pointing arrow button and select the word ‘Overlay’ from the drop-down list. Click on the Opacity and reduce it to almost 50%. Once you click OK you will see the difference and your final result is going to be wonderful. You’re done!
