Look around the internet. The most impressive websites often are designed to be very simple with little or no graphics, flash or even apparent content. White space on a webpage has always been a designer’s friend, but the necessity for simple designs has moved beyond “should have” to “must have” – for most websites anyway. While this may be a trend, it is probably one that is here to stay.

The most well known website, Google, is an apparently extremely simple design. Yes, it is a search engine, but even the sub pages of Google with details about email, videos and Google groups are extremely simple with the only noticeable graphics contained in the logo. While you could write off one or two sites that follow this “less is more” technique, it is hard to not notice this is the quickly becoming the latest trend on the net.

Targeting Your Audience

Of course, your site design depends on your target and your subject matter. A gaming website would not benefit as much from a simplistic and sparse design as it should generate interest and get visitors excited about games. On the contrary, a gaming site might benefit from having some simplistic design elements so that visitors can easily see where they are headed and the best things the site offers.

Most adults in search of knowledge, however, are frustrated by blinking graphics, bold colors and pages crammed with text and graphics. Large print and empty spaces make it far easier for a visitor to understand the message of the website and to read the content they wish. If annoying advertisements and intrusive text boxes constantly interrupt the flow of information or services, visitors may voice their displeasure by simply leaving. And they probably won’t be back.

Highly Targeted

The simple truth behind a simplistic design is it removes confusion and allows visitors to rapidly identify what they are seeking. This can be detrimental to webmasters or beneficial, depending on product or service offerings. If your website is varied with many functions or purposes, it may be challenging to select the one or two most targeted elements. For other websites, the return to simple design is a huge asset. They no longer have to build tremendous sites with all the bells and whistles around something small and simple.

Whatever the purpose of your website, decide first the target audience. Unless you are reaching out to specific niches that benefit from almost hyper sensory stimulation, you should then plan a low key website targeting that demographic. Don’t confuse low key with low cost, however. As any designer can tell you, the less a website design contains, the more power each piece of the design yields. There is nowhere to hide unflattering or unprofessional elements on a simple site. And for this reason, it is wise to consult a professional designer in regards to your project; it might be the best money you ever spent.
